Department of Justice Preclears Florida Voter Suppression Measure
On September 6, 2005, the Department of Justice precleared another round of voter suppression changes – this time to Florida law. This decision came only ten days after the the non-partisan Miami-Dade Election Reform Coalition of Florida (which includes the ACLU of Florida, the NAACP and approximately 18 other groups) sent the Department of Justice a 16-page letter accompanied by 48-pages of appendices urging federal officials to deny preclearance to HB 1567, a new Florida law that would end the use of sworn voter affidavits to prove identity at the polls. The measure also moves every challenged voter to a provisional ballot even if the allegations in the challenge can be immediately disproved. HB 1567 also shifts the counting of provisional ballots to the end of the canvassing period and amends existing Florida law to expand the buffer zone to prohibit soliciting to assist voters to within 100 feet of the polls. According to the Coalition, all these measures would make black and Latino voters worse off... ... READ MORE >>
